“God made marriage to be for life. That’s why you gotta keep your vows to your spouse. You gotta ask God to teach you how to be a good husband/wife. And don’t just follow your heart, because your heart can be deceived. But you gotta lead your heart.” - Fireproof
Jer. 17:9 (KJV)
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
By the heart today's verse speaks of the mind and the will of a man. It is normal to hear people tell you to follow your heart but as nice as that sounds, it's not what God tells us to do. We ought to be led by the Spirit. Being led by the Spirit means to be led by God's Word. In our relationship with our partner this is very crucial. Often you will feel the strong urge to proceed in a certain direction. The fact that you really do have that strong impression does not make it the right thing to do. If it does not tally with what the Word of God says, no matter how much like God it seems and how firmly you sense the feeling to carry on, it is not God leading you to do that. It may feel right and still be very wrong.
Our generation lives in a world where people break their marriage vows and/or quit being committed to it because it feels right to do so. What many do not realize is that the heart can be deceived. They tell you they are following their heart, and yes they are, but the problem is that God never told you to be led by your heart because He knows your heart can be deceived. We ought to lead our hearts, not follow it. For the unmarried, this is also very important in choosing a life partner. It may feel right to settle for a certain person and still be the wrong thing to do. Sometimes your heart may even condemn you over what is right. This is why you need to learn to lead your heart.
Your marriage/relationship will be filled with peace, happiness and prosperity if you lead your heart aright. Learning to lead your heart means endeavouring to carefully follow what the Word of God says concerning the issues in your relationship. God's Word is contained in the Bible. Even if you have gottten it all wrong before in your relationship because you made mistakes, now you can get it right. As long as you are running your home/relationship by God's Word, the way you feel at the moment does not matter. You will eventually feel good and enjoy a lasting sense of satisfaction. This is how we fulfil God's dream for our relationships and marriages. Today I encourage you not to just do what feels right; take your time to be certain that in your relationship with your spouse and/or partner you're leading your heart according to what God says is right. This way you both will enjoy great happiness.
