"When I have learnt to love God better than my earthly dearest, I shall love my earthly dearest better than I do now." -Unknown
Phil. 4:8 (NHEB)
Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.
Everyone who wants to have a sweeter relationship seeks to love their partner more than they currently do. But we sometimes skip a very important step. We often do not see that it is as we love God more that we actually succeed in loving our partner more. Some in an attempt to love their partner more, no longer prioritize their love for God. The truth remains that your partner will appreciate your love for them more when they can see that you love the Lord more. As you give yourself more to fulfilling God's purpose, your heart will pour out more love for your partner. So, the first lesson is to place your relationship with God as your primary heart's pursuit.
This does not in any way mean that you disregard or despise your partner, rather it simply means you love them but you love God more. Everyone wants a partner who is truly committed to God, one whose heart really runs after the things that give God pleasure. If they're committed to god, they'll be committed to you. It's such a blessing to be in relationship with someone who genuinely loves the Lord. You'll have no fears as they will honour you and treat you right. Loving God is a devotion we engage in from our inside. It has to do with dedicating our thoughts to the things that give God pleasure.
Today's verse gives us an idea of how we can improve our love for God. The verse is not just encouraging us to think about these things when they fly past our minds but it's letting us know we can choose to sit down and conceive these thoughts. Intentionally keeping our minds on honourable, pure, true, lovely things etc, will take us a step further in loving God. Finally, I must indulge you my dear reader to encourage your partner to love God more than they love you. It should give you joy to see that their relationship with God is flourishing. This should be our agenda in love, to love God more than we do our spouse/partner.
Keep Loving, Keep Living.........LOVE ISSUES
