"Love is friendship set on fire." - Jeremy Taylor.

Rev. 1:14 (KJV)
His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

Back then when I would go for relationship seminars and meetings and I heard the statement "Marry your friend", in my mind I would just sigh and roll my eyes wondering to myself, "Really? How in the world do you expect me to say yes to someone I don't have special feelings for all in the name of marrying my friend?". Back then in my impressionable mind, I had equated love to what I saw in the movies and saw it as that feeling that takes a hold of you completely without even giving you any notice that it's coming. And so, I thought that any other thing outside this preconceived pattern of love I had known would not and could not be interesting; I just could not see how such would translate into an exciting love story. Soon after though, I got to understand what true love really means and how best to go about it in love relationships. I tell you, this was truly an eye opener for me. Now I know that love is truly love in a relationship when what precedes it is the bond of good friendship rather than the "feet sweeping" tides of so-called strong romantic feelings. Believe me I've experienced both.

Today's quote us describing friendship that exists between two persons as a warm companionship that makes each first and foremost enjoy the other as a friend. For many healthy relationships today that took off on friendship, the friendship initially started without the intentions in either party to someday travel down the path of physical and emotional intimacy with the other person (for others though the case is different), and then it graduated into both realizing they wanted to live their lives together as partners. I can assure you that this type of relationship where your intimacy grows from friendship turns out to be the strongest and the sweetest kind. Instead of praying for life partners, people really ought to ask God to bless them with friends. You see when you think of fire it might sound a little scary if the first thing that comes to your mind is the fact that it can destroy. But fire is used in this world for a thousand and one things that make life better for mankind. Without fire do you know life won't be as good as we know it to be today? That's how important fire is. It has made our world a better place in more ways than we recognize.

I usually say to many who are looking for love and are going in directions that are not profitable for them, "Just be patient and look around your close circle of friends and be sure to have them close." I hope you know your friend today may turn out to be your life partner tomorrow? So, respect your friends and make sure they have a good testimony about you. Discard the notion of love at first sight happening to you because there really isn't anything like that. What actually exists is lust at first sight. True love must have a foundation just as any building that will rise above the ground must have a foundation or it will collapse. When you cannot tell the difference between love and lust, you become liable to become a victim by falling prey to the deceitfulness of the strong feelings that lust brings, thinking that's love. If you want a relationship where the fire of love will keep burning, engage openness and shun pretence as you develop good friendships with people of the opposite sex with no strings attached and then, sooner or later true love will take its course. Our text today describes Jesus Christ, the One who scripture says is a replica of God the Father, as having eyes that seem to be full of fire. Remember God is love. So, we can say in layman's terms that when you look into the face of Love you can see fire in His eyes. This fire is not scary and terrible but awesome, beautiful and breathtaking. If you will focus on building friendship prior to a love relationship and even in your relationship, then people will look at your relationship and see the beautiful and breathtaking fire of love. Do have a great day and a fabulous week.
