"It is the Holy Spirit's job to convict, God's job to judge and my job to love." - Billy Graham
Romans 13:8-10 (GNT)
Be under obligation to no one—the only obligation you have is to love one another. Whoever does this has obeyed the Law. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not desire what belongs to someone else”—all these, and any others besides, are summed up in the one command, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If you love others, you will never do them wrong; to love, then, is to obey the whole Law.
It's not strange to find someone doing what they're not supposed to do when their role isn't clearly defined and communicated to them. This is the reason why there are job descriptions in establishments and organizations, so no one is left in a state of assumption as to what they should be doing. In the Bible God has clearly defined and communicated to us our job description. If we concentrate on doing this one thing that we've been asked to do, we'll not need to bother about trying to please God. Focusing on doing what He's asked us to do is what pleases Him. Many people are eager about complying with dos and don'ts. In their minds they think that's what God wants us to be busy with. They want to show God how much they can discipline themselves to conform to what they sincerely believe are His standards. In trying to be right in their own power, they end up wrong. They are sincere but they're still wrong. They are wrong because that's not what God has asked us to do.
What we should do is give ourselves to love and allow love call the shots. When love takes the lead we won't have to struggle to stay on point. Speaking about laws, when God gave the law there was something else that was not revealed at the time. It was kept back. The people were not given the nature of love. They were asked to do what only the nature of love could produce in a man. Of course, they struggled and failed. All of them without exception failed. Those of us who believe in Jesus however, have been given the nature of love without the dos and don'ts of the law. The reason is simple. With the love nature there is no need for the laws as they once had them. As long as we keep reminding ourselves to allow this nature in us flow out, as long as we keep yielding to love, we'll keep the law unconsciously. We were designed to keep the laws by default. So, this is our job - to love people, when we feel like it and when we do not feel like it. I know there are times when we err in this path of love. We must pick up ourselves and stick to the process again.
I love today's quote. Billy Graham is a man that has met and spoken to several millions in the course of his life. He's undoubtedly the greatest evangelist of the 20th century. When a person like this talks about dealing with people, he knows what he's talking about. It's really sad that we often want to take the place of God and the place of the Holy Spirit. We want to judge and condemn. We want to put it to people out rightly that their actions are unacceptable by men and God, and that such can cut them off from all good things. But wait a second. That's not our job! It's not our job to condemn people. It's not our job to judge them. We have no right to run them down and tell them they're no good. We have no right to make them feel like they're no good. Doing such is crossing the boundaries of our legal jurisdiction. We have no right to pass negative sentences on them. That's simply not our job. It's outside our job description. Let's leave God's job to God. Let's leave the Holy Spirit's job to the Holy Spirit. If we stick to what we should be doing we'll be just fine. Our relationships will blossom and the people around us will have the right esteem about themselves even when they have erred. They'll come to see their wrongs and will be truly sorry. God does not run us down with words. We have no right to run others down. Let's simply do our job.
