"Love is a command, not just a feeling. Somehow, in the romantic world of music and theatre we have made love to be what it is not. We have so mixed it with beauty and charm and sensuality and contact that we have robbed it of its higher call of cherishing and nurturing." - Ravi Zacharias
Proverbs 4:20-21 (ISV)
20 My son, pay attention to my words, and listen closely to what I say.
21 Do not let them out of your sight;4 keep them within your heart.
After watching a film some time ago, I remembered the title of a secular song that was popular several years ago. At the time it was popular, I liked the song because of the beats and a line in the song but a friend pointed out to me that I had not taken out time to carefully weigh the entire song. He said I would think differently about the song if I understood the entire story presented in the lyrics. Truly I soon got to see that he was right and that I was naive all along. Sometimes many people today still fall into that mistake I fell into then. Many of us swallow ideas and repeat them because they are presented to us in melodious voices, romantic tunes, nice beats and a very attractive package. Be careful to check everything you hear by placing them side by side with God's wisdom, otherwise you'll unconsciously embrace a lie.
In today's world a lot of errors, abominations and abnormalities are constantly being driven into our minds from the secular world through all the things happening on the various media platforms around us. These things being projected have so gotten absorbed by so many without them realizing it, to the extent that many in their minds have taken these ideas to be the norm. Brothers and sisters, what's normal to the world is not normal to us. We must be careful about where we get our coaching from. We are a different people. We operate from a different ideology. Our system of life is different. We live in this world but what we have within us is a higher life. For example, on the issue of love, many who unfortunately have repeatedly had bad experiences from a loved one through a heartbreak, broken marriages, failed relationships, friendships gone bad etc, would naturally have a mind conditioned to seeing love as not meant for them, a false concept or being a facade. But that isn't true.
Despite your experiences, what you watch on TV and what you hear others say, it remains true that love is from God and that He'd love each and everyone to experience it in their relationships with others. Just because you didn't have a good experience with the person you first loved doesn't mean you can no longer find and enjoy the true love God wants you to enjoy. Break free from the mentality that suggests to you that love only turns around to stab you. Be wise enough to know that although what happened to you was real (in that it really happened), it's not the reality. The reality is and will always be God's Word, no matter what you experience. Refuse to buy the lies sold on the media. Guard your heart and your life. No matter how interesting the movies, soaps, musical videos, songs etc, seem to be, if they are inconsistent with what the Word of God says, then realise they are out to destroy you. Don't be fooled. Will you knowingly swallow poison because it was coated with a little honey?
When we choose to pay attention to the teaching of truth on true love based solely on God's word, then we enjoy the very essence and benefits of it in our relationships. No matter the bad news flying around about divorce and separations, true love is a commitment to see your marriage/relationship work come what may. As Ravi says in today's quote, love should never be devoid of cherishing and nurturing at all times, in the good times and in the bad times. That's exactly how our Heavenly Father treats us all. He knows we could take the wrong turn the next minute yet He still loves us so much. Learn from Him. Imitate Him. The power to love like Him has been given to everyone who accepts the life that Jesus Christ gives. If you have received this life, then resolve to use God's ideas of love to run your life.
