"Love - THE FEELING - is a fruit of love, the verb." - Stephen R. Covey
1John 4:7-8 (OEBus)
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God; and everyone who loves has received the new life from God and knows God.
8 The person who does not love has not learned to know God; for God is love.
Everyone wants to experience love and what it is like to be in love. So true. I watched a video clip a while ago of a little girl of not more than 5 years of age and her dad. He got her to repeat some promises he believed would be of help to her as she grew and she happily played along. But just as her dad completed the statement where he asked her to promise not to have a boyfriend, the little girl who was listening attentively immediately jumped up and threw a tantrum, and as if with tears in her eyes and said, "No daddy, not that." Was I shocked? Well I guess so especially by the fact that she was only a little girl who barely knows anything about love. But I think in her mind she had equated love to having a boyfriend and that was why she put up such a reaction at the sound of her father trying to make her promise she would never have one.
The point is this, until we all understand and accept that genuine love isn't just feelings and about all the so-called butterflies in the world that rushes into one's tummy at the sight of a fair one to behold, we'll be missing the whole point. Love isn't about having a boyfriend or a girlfriend relationship that allows you express the feelings of love when things look all nice and sweet and are going on well nut then, when the very foundation is tested, it's time to split. Love is way more than what we see people practice in such everyday relationships around us. Today's quote makes a point that we need to take to heart. Love is really more of a verb, an action word. This means it does something. There is not a period when it is redundant. Once love becomes redundant, once love loses its action, it has lost its true essence.
When we were students in school we didn't feel like reading many times but we knew that in order to become and remain successful students, we had to make a move. We didn't have to wait for the feelings to come. We didn't need to feel like reading first before we read. Again and again we acted in spite of the absence of the feeling and we discovered that the more we stayed at reading, the more we grew to love reading. The feelings had no choice but to double up and meet us. If we had waited for the feeling first we probably would have failed and it may never have come. It's about the same thing with love. We don't wait for the feeling and then follow it. No, we lead the feeling by acting first. True love is like a tree that produces so many beautiful qualities. The feelings of love also known as romantic love is one of these qualities. If you want love to last, then plant the seed of true love in your hearts first by allowing its Source (God) be in your life and spirit through Jesus Christ. Then, exercise yourself maximally in love through acting it.
