"Love is not a thing of enthusiastic emotion. It is a rich, strong, manly, vigorous expression of the whole round Christian character - the Christ-like nature in its fullest development. And the constituents of this great character are only to be built up by ceaseless practice." - Henry Drummond
I Cor 13:4-8 (ESV)
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant:
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
Being in love is such a beautiful thing and it brings about beautiful feelings, no doubt about that. Hence, the craze/desire for love in every person no matter how young or old they might be and when it happens to some, they call it the most wonderful feeling they could have ever experienced. Then you hear them talking of their hopes to live happily ever after. But does love really run smoothly and end all rosy with no hitches along the way? To be honest, the answer is no, it doesn't. At some point in the love relationship, the story may 'seem' to change course but that's only because the fantasies fade away for the real dawn of true love which is a dedication to making sacrifices consciously and continually because you have chosen to love the particular person you are with.
It's important to remember the adage that says change is the only constant thing in life. Many people do forget this or they think this principle doesn't apply to the matters of love. A lot of relationships and marriages fall apart because there were false hopes; the man thought the lady would never change and/or the lady thought the man would never change. We all change at different points in our lives. Our status could change, our physique could change, our moods could change, even our characters could change, either in the positive or in the negative direction. It is when such changes are not properly handled that they lead to a break up in a relationship/marriage. Until we are taught to always remember to accommodate some changes in our spouse/partner and even in our friends, we might never fully enjoy what true love really should be. A truly strong relationship and marriage is founded on unconditional love. Unconditional love means love that stays the same irrespective of the conditions that arise.
We need to be told that having a good level of emotional stability in our lives, especially in the issues of love and relationships is hinged on how sensitive we are to the changes that occur in our relationship and how properly we deal with them. There are changes we should be ready to adjust to in love, knowing that one way or the other, they were bound to come and that they will eventually make the relationship better, if we manage them well. Take a look at today's Bible passage. I have found that the best way to love is to heed to what true love is as presented in our today's opening Bible passage. Where all these attributes of love are present, changes that come along the way in a relationship/marriage will be well handled.
Where the two persons involved are endeavouring yo beat each other at loving the way this passage teaches, pride can't survive. Love and pride do not go together. Love is light while pride is darkness. Pride wants to be a boss but love seeks to serve. Having a relationship/marriage that works well means that you're always sensitive to changes and willing to adjust, and all the while still giving honour and respect even when it appears difficult or unpleasant to do so. Only by doing these can we see our love lives flourish as they should. May I inform you that changes are bound to come. If you cannot deal with accepting changes and patiently working with your partner to master or overcome them, you're not ready for true love. Do always remember that sacrifice is the language of true love.
