But can't we talk over the phone "?  asked Cherise as she wondered what the matter could be and besides it was the norm for the both of them. Frederick had always been a guy who was open and true. Despite having so many secret admirers, he never took advantage of any girls' feelings nor lead them wrongly. "I don't think it will be appropriate to" answered Fredrick. "Well,  that might have to wait till I come back to Benin because I am traveling to Ibadan tomorrow morning". Cherise said but she knew deep down  that was the wrong thing to do especially knowing that someone, a friend took the pain all the way from Warri to Benin to come visit her in the time where movements in Benin were restricted as the Governor ship elections were just concluded.

Fredrick a little disappointed had no choice but to let her go with what she had planned.  He didn't bother to ask her why because he felt pained that after informing her he came because of her, she still was adamant to undergo her journey. "Could it be she's still hasn't forgiven me for what I did"?  Fredrick thought to himself acknowledging that he acted as one who didn't have a heart. Their friendship had blossomed so well in the past three years, he couldn't deny she was a special and different breed especially with the high level of dedication she poured her heart to during the two occasions they worked as a team for the summit.

Cherise as Fredrick could recall, was a hardworking, decent, courageous, faithful, courteous and dedicated young lady who really loved God as she loved to hear him teach her God's word. The only times they had seen each other were the two occasion of the summit as well as a special Thanksgiving he had invited her to attend with his friends and family. They mostly communicated via phone calls and chats. He could barely remember how she looked but was sure she was pretty tall with a not too slender frame.

Fredrick had made up his mind to return back to his school in Warri that same evening since the main reason why he came was leaving town the following day and also he recalled he had pastors' meeting to attend back in campus. He said within himself, if I can't tell her now then it means I would have to keep the friendship alive now that his heart was made up and tell her some other time. Barely resting at home for two hours, Fredrick put his things together into his back pack, kissed his mum as she told him safe journey and left the house to catch the next car to Warri.

As Cherise sat on her seat, she was glad she made it to the park quite early to get the seat number she always was comfortable with. It was 7:45am and the bus had just left the park for Ibadan. The thought of the reseat exams hit her again but thank God for his Words which she had found solace in and kept confessing to herself, " And I know that all things work together for my good for I love God, and I have been called according to His purpose". She knew deep inside that something good was going to come out of this.

Inserting  her eyepiece into her ears, she settled in to listen to her favorite relationship teacher, Pastor Bimbo Odukoya's teaching on "How to choose a life partner".  She loved her teachings which always resonated with what she knew. As she listened on, suddenly a call came in, she picked. "Hello, good morning" she said wondering who it could be this early. "Hello ma, my name is Tega, we called you because your number was the last dialed number from the phone of our Pastor who just had an accident". "My goodness, an accident", who could that be she thought, "He immediately continued as if he read her thoughts. "He is Pastor Fredrick Ogbule, TFI's President, Warri Chapter.

"What, oh my God", Cherise almost created a scene in the 15 seater Toyota Hiace Bus. She couldn't believe her ears. "Ma, we ask you to come down to General Hospital just at the outskirts of Warri immediately". Cherise was confused, she didn't know what to do. Her bus was almost approaching Oore, Ondo State and going back to Benin was not an option. "Please sir, how is his condition? And have you called any of his Family members, mum or brother?"  "Well, yes", the young man on the other side of the phone continued, "His mum has been briefed and is already on her way here. Although he's condition is critical but he's stable now".

As she thanked the young man who later introduced himself as one of the members of his team, she hung up. Cherise knew she was in for it. Why would someone who came all the way, only to see her have an accident returning back. She couldn't understand why all these where happening to her.

Again, the thought of what Fredrick had told her he wanted to discuss with her even made her more scared. She had no glue of what it was but it most have been  something serious since he didn't want them to talk over the phone. All she could do at this time was to put him in prayers and as soon she returns to school for her reseat exams which was in three weeks, she would pay him a visit.

Time flew so fast as if it was on the wings of an eagle and three weeks had come and gone. A lot had happened in that space. Cherise had been communicating with Fredrick who had told her all the nitty gritty of the accident he was involved in. It was sure the Mercies of God who didn't allow Fredrick to have a complete spinal cord fracture which would have made him bedridden or wheelchair bound all his life. He was being taken care by the best Neurosurgeon team in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital as he was diagnosed of incomplete spinal cord injury and was going to be there for a period of not less than 3months.

The whole incident had brought them close again as they always spoke every single day over the phone. For Cherise, she felt it was her responsibility to make sure he was glad and encouraged and that's why she kept in touch. For Fredrick, he was glad God not only kept him alive but had reconfirmed that there was something about Cherise he couldn't place his finger on.

Cherise walked swiftly into the Neurosurgery ward with her white ward coat on. It was out of bounds for visitors at the hour. She didn't want anyone to stop or ask her questions. Walking straight to where Fredrick laid, she could see him with eyes wide opened listening to whatever via an eyepiece. "Hey" she said trying to catch his attention with a wave. Fredrick had changed,  he looked slimmer on the bed but this cute face and radiant personality was, even more so obvious.

"oh Cherise, you are finally here, I'm glad you could make it. Fredrick said, trying not to look elsewhere but just on Cherise's face. He couldn't deny the fact that she had matured so fast or was it that he was so focused three years ago when they first met that he didn't realize how beautiful and curvy she was. Even a year after then, when he invited her for his special Thanksgiving service, he was drawn to her mostly because of her respectful and sweet personality.

"Sure thing, I had to come today after my journey back yesterday which almost took the whole day, there was a terrible accident along the road that made vehicles go slow for three hours, it was crazy ". Cherise had become so free yet again with Fredrick that she could tell him anything. The conversation went on and on, they spoke about different things, they cheered and laughed. Cherise could see that despite Frederick's condition, it didn't weigh his spirit down one bit, he was like the life of the party even in the hospital.

"Okay, so what was it you wanted to tell me that just couldn't be spoken about over the phone? " Asked Cherise. She had been itching to know what it was. In the past three weeks, she had noticed that each time she prayed for Frederick's quick healing and recovery, Fredrick name would keep coming back to her like a still small voice filling in the blanks of the kind of person God wanted for her as a life partner. Nahh, she would tell herself. It can't be Fredrick, he's been and is still surrounded with ladies who he has known over the years even from his child hood. Besides he barely knows me, we have been friends from afar, she went on and on stating reasons why he couldn't be.
