Cherise was such a stunner. She had all the beauty that a complete African woman would have in all the right places and in the right proportion. Her statistics were to die for, 38 : 28 : 44.  She was a final year medical student in the University of Benin.

She was a such a beauty as a lot of guys wanted to date her. Not only because she had the body of a goddess nor being brainy but because she was chaste and had a meek spirit,  the kind of woman any man would want to make his wife. she was was also very active as a leader in one of the leading campus fellowships in school.

Cherise had made up her mind not to just date anyone but would seek the face of God for the right person even if she had to fast forty days and forty nights. For her, what people called dating would be courtship as she would want it to lead to marriage.

This had become her resolve after she mistakenly took infatuation as love when one of her colleagues just won't let her be. Shame was almost crippling in but by the mercies of God, she found the strength to cut ties with him. And there she was again, back as as an epitome of the the proverb 31 woman, in which almost all the sisters in her fellowship took her as one to emulate.

As she was studying in the reading room for her final exams and almost dozing off, her Black Berry rang. "Yes, Hello" she said, trying to compose herself, waiting for the voice at the other end to come through. "Yeah Hello Cherise, how are you doing today".  The voice came like a banger.  It was so manly and calm with an accent like that of an English Lord pronouncing every word right like he was the prince of phonetics. " I am fine thank you, please who am I speaking with"?  "It's Fredrick  speaking, remember me"?  As he spoke she immediately remembered.

"Oh Fredrick, wow, it's been a while" she said, as she tried to fake a response. Fredrick was a guy she had met during one of her fellowship's annual meeting termed God And Me (GAM) Summit. This was three years ago and later they had become just good friends. They had  worked together in the Evangelism Team of the summit. Frederick was the Head of the Team while Cherise together with another representative from the University of Ibadan were to assist him.  Their friendship had kicked of on a platonic level, later became a little close but then Frederick's over confidence in himself caused a rift between them both and it made Cherise put him off.

''I just called to check on you and to ask if you won't mind assisting me again in this year's GAM summit"? It's happening in the University of Lagos and I would really appreciate your coming".  Fredrick had always been a guy who could get anything he wanted done especially from the opposite sex. With a charming personality and handsome looks, he was the kind of guy any lady would love to take home to momma.

Cherise had started having a soft spot for him up until he told her to her face via a telephone call that he felt she was too fast for him. "Too fast, what daah... "  reminiscenced Cherise.  Wasn't he the one that introduced her to his friends and family as his special friend making her think they both had something brewing only for him to drop such nonsense as bombshell."Well, I don't blame him cause he knows he's so fine and Holy ghost filled", she thought.

"Oh really, that sounds good and I would have loved to but I am currently preparing for my final exams and won't be available at all".  She said rolling her eyes. "Oh that's okay, I wish you all the best in your exams". Frederick said. "And I hope we see one of these days, we got some catching up to do". Okay then, take care".  As he hung up, Cherish didn't even want to give thought to what she heard last.  Frederick was just an unpredictable young man.

"Results have been pasted at the Admin block just now ooh".  Cherise heard someone shouting just few rooms away from hers. The entire Medical hostel immediately became frantic as the final year students rushed out to go have a look. Cherise heart rate increased to almost twice the normal. She had to pull herself to together to go check her result. "The worse case would be at least failing one of the papers and having to resit" she thought to herself as she left her room to go check. She had never had to write an exam twice but she recalled that Internal Medicine gave her a tough time. The oral and steeple chase were so bad that she had a premonition that she might have to rewrite it.

As Cherise approached the board, she could already see people looking sad. Some had happy faces while the others were just giving her the shivers. She found her name, traced it and saw that what she feared most had befallen upon her. She had 4/5 and had to resit internal medicine. With the pain, she had to encourage herself. As she turned to leave, her phone rang. " Who could be calling at this time" she lifted her phone and saw it was her Mum. Tears gathered around her eyes.

"Hello mummy" her voice gave her away as it trembled. "Hello my baby, ah ah what's the matter"?  Her mum could tell from her voice something had gone wrong. "Mummy I didn't pass all my papers" Cherise sobbed. "Calm down my child, it's okay. All things are working together for your good."  she said trying to encourage her daughter. "Mum will be taking the first bus home tomorrow" Oh yes, please do" Her mother cut in,  "you need to come rest before the resit exams".  "Okay mummy,  see you tomorrow" Cherish said hanging up.

Leaving the premise, still sobbing and feeling pretty bad, her cell phone rang again. She thought it was Dawn, her best friend who was calling to check on her if she had passed. But as she picked up her phone, it was Fredrick.

"For Heavens sake, why is this man calling me at this time" she thought to herself and contemplated whether to pick his call or not. The last time they spoke was over four weeks ago. He had chatted her up on few occasions though she didn't even take them serious. Well, she had nothing to loose if she did or didn't. She pulled herself together, dried the tears and cleared her throat.

"Yeah, Hello".  "Hi Cherise, how are doing today"?  His voice as usual was so soft and calm, it almost made her forget her problem. "I'm doing great, and you"?  She responded swiftly trying not to let him know she had been crying. "I am fine as well". "I just got into Benin from Warri, I would love to come see you tomorrow, hope that's fine". Cherise was shocked, she was still processing the reply to give Fredrick, when he quickly  added "You are the reason why I came into town. There is something I need to talk to you about." he said.

  1. Brother Fredrick, English Lord, say your mind or let her face her resit in peace.
This Bros reminds me of the rhyme 'once I caught a fish alive, then I let it go again...'
