"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rom. 5:5 (ISV)
...God’s love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
As I remember the life of Martin Luther King Jr., I cannot but admire the strength of love and its ability to transform not just individuals but an entire nation. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in the midst of tyranny and hate, yet he chose to love the same white people who were hateful toward him and the black people in general. As a result of his contribution of love, today there's a day set aside in the United States to honour his memory and the amazing values of his life. Where many past presidents of the U.S and notable persons do not have a single day to honour them, a man who led a transformational campaign for equal rights and justice, is remembered because he did all he did with a love attitude. Love gives you an undying legacy. Though Martin Luther died at the age of 39, his contribution is remembered and celebrated around the world because of the love quality he maintained throughout the revolution.
Love has made a legend out of him. What made this man so unique? It was because being a believer, he understood that hate is not consistent with the nature of the one who has believed in Jesus. It doesn't matter what is being done to us, we cannot hate because by nature we do not hate. It's not just in us to hate because we are no more ordinary people. Something has happened to us on our inside. God who is love and who is one with His Spirit has poured His love nature into us by putting His Spirit within us. This is where the capacity to love even when we're being hated comes from. Dear friend, in your relationships with your friends, family members, colleagues, spouse, partner, neighbours etc, let this understanding guide you. You do not hate back when others hate you because you're not that way. There's a fountain of love that has broken loose on your inside. You do not lack the supply of love. Even though you cannot feel it in your body, the truth remains that your heart is filled with love. You're that person who repays evil with good.
Like our opening quote says, sticking with love is a decision. Sometimes there is no logical reason why you should love considering how you've been or are being treated but love is not mere logic. It's a higher logic - God's logic. To hate, one has to first store evil thoughts and bitterness within. That's why Martin Luther Jr. calls hate a burden because it does harm first of all to the person harboring it. Make up your mind to love profusely today and always. Stay sweet to your spouse/partner whether they're as sweet to you as you want or not. As you stay sweet and keep loving, your attitude of love will eventually become contagious. I encourage you to employ this logic today and henceforth.
