"Where there is love there is life." - Mahatma Gandhi
1 John 4:8 (ISV)
The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
The first time I read today's quote I wondered what Mahatma had seen or heard that made him come up with that. It appears easy to see that the presence of love infers the presence if life but a good look at the quote makes you appreciate that love is really what brings about life. Starting from the very beginning, it was Love who formed the earth and brought about living things. The words of Love brought about what didn't exist before. Without Love there would have been no life (remember that God is Love). Creation was inspired by Love. Love is the essence of life. Where there is no love, one is merely existing. Take for instance, the way you feel when you have had an ugly misunderstanding with someone you love or with a good friend who has always been there for you. Now things have deteriorated and you feel so bad but at that moment nothing can be done to erase the memory. You sometimes wish you could take back the hands of time and prevent both of you from getting to this point. You feel like your whole world is empty; as someone who's been left alone. It really hurts when you realize you allowed something worthless to come between your friendship with someone who God actually designed to be an asset to your life.
We can go on and on citing examples of how much life gradually tends towards emptiness when love is put in the back seat. The flavour, the sweetness, the essence of life is taken away when we do not submit ourselves to the beautiful rhythms of love. Life is like a desert without true love (the love God teaches us to practice). True love makes life worth living. When one has experienced a failed relationship/marriage and finds love again (or is found by love again), it feels so good; it's like getting a second chance to go on in life. It actually is like being brought back from the dead. This is just an example of how we were designed to love and be loved. Sometimes people have said, "If my relationship/marriage fails, I don't know if I'll survive it. I'll just kill myself." Although that's an extreme statement to make and no failure is worth taking your life over, such statements go a long way to show that people deep down in their hearts know that love is the reason why life has meaning.
Friends, today I want you to know that nothing really makes life worthwhile except love, not wealth or fame, all the riches in this world cannot bring the joy and happiness that living your life in love can bring. Cherish people. Cherish those who cross your path everyday. Talk to them like they are kings and queens. Treat them like royalty. Let them know because of how you treat them that there's something special in them. As you do this you get to enjoy life more. The love you give away comes back to you increased and multiplied. Cherish your friends, family and that special partner that God has blessed you with who truly loves you and would do anything to see you happy. Let go of whatever grievance or hurt that separates you from the love you once shared with someone and allow the freedom that love brings to bring a gush of freshness into your soul again today. God wants you to enjoy life. If you deprive love from having its way, you're depriving yourself of what the life God wants you to enjoy. You can enjoy more life today. Now you know how.
